Barry Evans is a trained actor and director living in Manchester, England and a full member of Equity and Spotlight. Born, raised and pondered in Warrington, Barry early-on knew his career path and at aged 19, emigrated way up North to the East coast beauty of Scarborough to train at the School of Creative Arts. Under the guidance and direction of Paul Elsam (author of Acting Characters) and alongside the Stephen Joseph Theatre and Sir Alan Ayckbourn, Barry trained to become a versatile character actor.
While training, Barry appeared as the lead in a new play at the SJT called Pinochio.co.uk and at the Westwood Theatre in The Round in Attempts on Her Life, A Christmas Carol, Ashgirl, The Tempest, Time of My Life and Grease. It was while training that Barry discovered his other avenue of skills in direction. He had visited New Jersey, USA and saw a friend’s production of Time of My Life. Recognising that it first premiered at his training theatre, Barry decided to approach Paul Elsam and Alan Ayckbourn about bringing it back to its original home. Both Paul and Alan agreed and during rehearsals, receiving help from Ayckbourn and watching how he worked with the actors, Barry knew it would be a new change to his plan of being an actor.
Using his work as an actor, Barry is intentionally informing his work as a director for the better. He has since been able to apply it to his own debut play, Have A Very Nice Day which premiered in Manchester 2012 with great reviews. He was then asked to direct a short commission for Salford University called Waiting Around by Aaron Cobham and is most recently embarking on his first 24:7 Theatre Festival Production, Night on The Field of Waterloo by Thomas Bloor directing a five-strong cast through a superb one-act play in July 2013.
As an actor, since graduating in 2005, Barry has since saved the life of a time-travelling copper (Life on Mars) driven a JCB (for real, during a short film!) worked on board a space ship and flown it in a hyperspace-race – and won! (Hyperdrive). He has also toured Spain and all of the UK in various roles including Long John Silver (Treasure Island).
Barry is currently directing “A night on the field of Waterloo” at the 24/7 Theatre Festival
